How to add subtitles to a video

Most viewers watch short videos muted, and subtitles make long videos accessible and searchable. This workflow takes you from raw recording to publish-ready captions.

Add subtitles

In short

  • AI creates a timed first draft from the speech in your recording.
  • Review warnings for crowded captions, fast reading speed and overlaps.
  • Style captions and preview them on your own video.
  • Export SRT, VTT, ASS, SSA, SBV, SMI, TXT, JSON or a captioned video — no watermark.

Step by step

  1. Upload your recording — one you own or have permission to use.
  2. Generate subtitles after signing in; the credit quote appears first.
  3. Fix the flagged lines: crowded captions, fast reading speeds, overlaps and lower-confidence segments.
  4. Style and position captions inside the safe area.
  5. Export a subtitle file or a captioned video.

Which export to choose

  • SRT — broad compatibility with video platforms.
  • VTT — web players.
  • ASS or SSA — styled workflows in editors.
  • Captioned video — styles burned into the picture, rendered in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit without an account?

Yes. The sample, importing subtitle files, editing, styles and file exports work without signing up; AI generation needs sign-in and credits.

Do SRT files keep my styling?

No. Plain SRT and VTT do not preserve visual style; use ASS/SSA or export a captioned video.
